Field notes

Fig. 012 — Observation

For fourteen years, a 122-foot sorcerer's hat rose above the rooftops of Disney's Hollywood Studios. Its midnight-blue surface was scattered with silver stars and crescent moons. Beneath it, visitors gathered for photographs, merchandise, and a little shelter from the Florida sun. Its removal restored the long-obscured sightline to the Chinese Theatre, but also retired one of the park's most conspicuous landmarks.

The original (and much smaller) hat was used by a rather unimposing apprentice in Fantasia (1940), whose attempt to automate a household chore produced an unexpectedly large workforce.

The hat may have left Hollywood Boulevard, but the brooms, apparently, are still multiplying.
