Field notes

Fig. 122 — Observation

When Disneyland’s PeopleMover opened in 1967, it was more than a leisurely tour of Tomorrowland. Developed by WED Enterprises and sponsored by Goodyear, the attraction demonstrated an automated transportation system that Walt Disney envisioned as part of the cities of the future.

Its open-air vehicles traveled along an elevated guideway, propelled by rotating tires embedded in the track. The continuous circuit carried guests through Tomorrowland’s buildings and attractions before returning them to the station where they began.

The Florida variant still runs its loop, but the original PeopleMover closed in 1995, giving way to the short-lived Rocket Rods. The elevated tracks remain, winding through Tomorrowland without a passenger in more than two decades.

Tomorrow's transportation arrived in 1967. It may have been ahead of schedule.
